The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) is a statutory body established by the National Cohesion and Integration (NCI) Act, No. 12 of 2008, which was enacted after the unfortunate events of the 2007 post-election violence. The desire to establish NCIC was borne out of the realization that lasting peace, sustainable development and harmonious coexistence among Kenyans requires deliberate normative, institutional and attitudinal processes of constructing nationhood, national cohesion and integration. It was also a recognition that Kenya had many communities with diverse cultural practices and as many political affiliations that required a common rallying strategy to enhance cohesion amongst them. The Commission’s mandate is to facilitate and promote peaceful co-existence among people living in Kenya by advocating for cohesiveness among the diverse groups in the country. To actualise this, the Commission facilitates processes and policies that encourage elimination of all forms of ethnic discrimination irrespective of background, ethnicity, social circle, race and ideological belief(s).
